English Bulldogs

English Bulldogs, often referred to as British Bulldogs or simply Bulldogs, are one of the top ten most popular dogs in America, according to the American Kennel Club. This article will briefly cover the history of the English Bulldog, and discuss the physical and personality characteristics that have made them the popular breed they are today.

Mentions of the Bulldog go back as far as sixteenth century England. There, Bulldogs were typically used for bull baiting (or bear baiting), a violent sport in which a Bulldogs were used to attack and kill a bull, typically by means of latching on to its throat and suffocating it. The modern Bulldog was created by mixing it with a pug, and it is much less athletic and aggressive than its predecessors.

Bulldogs of centuries ago were much leaner and more fit than modern bulldogs. The modern bulldog is short and squat, often with rolls of fat covering its body. English Bulldogs have a short, pushed it nose that often leads to breathing difficulties. Bulldogs are not very athletic dogs, but they should still be given exercise to prevent obesity.

English bulldogs are enthusiastic and fun pets to own. Although they can be lazy, when they get riled up they love to play tug of war and other games where they can show off their jaw strength. They are very humorous and loving pets. Most modern English Bulldogs wouldn’t make for very good guard dogs, as breeders have done their best to get rid of aggression in the breed.

They also make for great house pets because they grow very fond of family members, and tend to refrain from wandering too far from their comfort zone. They are also relatively easy to train and tend not to bark, although they do snore and breathe quite loudly at times.

Having owned an English Bulldog myself, I can personally attest to their viability as a pet. They make for excellent friends that you will never forget. Sadly, they have short life expectancies (around 10 years) due to inherent physical attributes. But although their life spans may be short, the time you spend with them will be a fun and loving time that you will remember for the rest of your life.
