Pit Bulls are a breed of dog that are fairly popular in the United States today. To some extent, their reputation has been maligned on account of some individuals who use them for dog-fighting and other illegal activities. But for the most part, the Pit Bull is a loyal, friendly and intelligent dog.

The term “Pit Bull” is normally used to refer to one of three distinct breeds of Pit Bull:

The American Pit Bull Terrier

The American Staffordshire Terrier

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

The term is also commonly used to refer to dogs with a significant mix of any combination of the three aforementioned breeds.

Pit Bulls were originally bred in England and Scotland for a variety of purposes, including killing vermin, hunting, and as family companions. Some of them were selectively bred by people for their prowess as fighting dogs.

Pit Bulls have developed something of a bad reputation over the years, in part because of the number of Pit Bull related attacks on humans. In the year 2006, there were 16 human deaths as a result of Pit Bull attacks. These attacks are caused mainly by people who either abuse, neglect, or specifically train their Pit Bulls to become aggressive and territorial.

If raised with love, attention, and care, Pit Bulls will grow up to be affable and companionable dogs. They can make for energetic, intelligent and fun family pets.

As with all other dogs, if reared improperly, a Pit Bull will develop problems. But if given a good chance at life, a Pit Bull can be as good a pet dog as any other breed of dog.
