Training your pet dog to fetch is a fun and entertaining activity. If you have already trained your dog basic obedience commands like sit, stay and down, it will be easier to train her to fetch.

The success of training your pet dog to fetch depends on positive reinforcers, for example, rewarding your dog’s desired behavior with a treat, praise or petting in a timely fashion.

Fetch is a simple command that can be taught to puppies. It is an entertaining game for both you and your dog. Fetching creates bonding between the dog and trainer.

To begin training your pet dog to fetch, take two identical toys which your dog enjoys playing with. Hide one of the toys in your pocket and throw the other toy within a short distance after you show it to your dog. After that, release your dog from the leash and gave her the command, “Fetch!”. If your dog responded by chasing after the toy and picking it up, take out the hidden toy.

When the dog sees this, she will probably drop the first toy in favor of the new toy. When this happens, wait for your dog to return to you and take control of the leash before you throw the new toy. After you have throw the new toy, give your pet dog the command, “Fetch!”. As your dog chase after the new toy, produce the first toy. Repeat the same routine with the fetch command until your dog learn how to fetch. If your dog is not motivated to fetch the toy, reward her with a food for example a piece of meat. Kong dog toys are most suitable for training your dog with the fetching command. A stick can also be used to train a dog to faith although it will be a little painful to your dog’s teeth.

Once your dog reliably brings the toy back to you, you can remove the leash and have her fetch it on her own. When your dog understand what the command “fetch” means, you can train her to retrieve a particular object and calling it by name until she can identify the object. For example, if you want your dog to get the newspaper, give her the command, “Fetch Newspaper”. Your dog should retrieve only the newspaper. If she does it correctly, reward her to reinforce the command.

When your pet dog can already retrieve naturally, she should be trained with the forced retrieve method. The purpose of force retrieve is to train a dog by using some form of compulsion to pick up an object in her mouth and return it to the trainer hand. A dog that is force trained will retrieve what the trainer wants her to retrieve, in the order that the trainer wants her to retriever and deliver it to the trainer in the manner that the trainer wants. Otherwise, the dog can drop the object, sniff around and to find something else she may wish during the training. Force retrieve training is necessary if you want to take your dog for hunting.

While training, always have two toys with you. Try to make your dog interested in the second toy when she comes back to you. When you show that you are having a great time with the second toy, your dog will drop the ball faster. You are never to throw the second ball until the dog has drop the first ball.
