If you intend to participate in the dog show or obedience ring, you should train your pet dog the stand command.  The stand command is a handy dog obedience training command that can be used in many situations. The stand command is useful when you are bathing your dog, clipping her nails or when your pet dog is at the vet office.

The best place to teach your pet dog the stand command is a familiar place that is free from any distraction.

You should begin teaching your dog the stand command when she is in a sitting position and then proceed to the laying down position.

Reward your pet dog with tasty dog treats when she respond to your command and perform the instances of the “stand” behavior. This will reinforce the stand command on the dog.

Firstly, hold some tasty treats in your hand. The treats will be used to lure your pet dog into the standing position. With your dog in a sitting position, hold the treat a few inches away from her nose and then slowly draw it away to a higher position. If your dog responds to you in a standing position, you should immediately reward her with the treat and praise her.

If your dog does not respond to the food bait, you can say some encouraging words to her.

Keep repeating and practicing the same routine with your dog and reward her every time she respond to you in a standing position.

After your pet dog have learned how to stand with the food lure, remove the food lure and use it only as a reward. Put your empty hand before her eyes and move it away horizontally and eventually move upward. If your dog continues to follow your hand in a stand position, praise her and reward her with a treat. When your dog is consistently following your empty hand, you can reward your dog less frequently.

Once your pet dog consistently performs the stand, you can use the verbal command to train your dog the stand exercise. To achieve this, give your dog the command, “Stand!” and move your empty hand away horizontally within a few inches from her and eventually move upward. You are to repeat this exercise as many times as you can throughout the day. When you dog is in the standing position, praise her and reward her with a treat.

After that, you can drop the hand signal and prompt your dog to stand with only the verbal command. Give your dog the command, “Stand!” and wait for your dog to respond. If your dog responds in a standing position, reward her by giving her a treat and pat her. If your dog does not move when you gives the command, “Stand!”, goes back to the step and use the hand signal.

When you are training your pet dog, you must have patience and perseverance. If your or your dog is frustrated with the training, stop and go to play for a while. The stand command is useful in the dog show because your dog will be required to stand while being touched all over for inspection. Once your dog has learned the stand command, you can touch your dog so that she will becomes used to it. Start by touching the dog’s face and then stop for a while in front of the nose and then rub your hands on her sides, finally down the leg and tail. After that, give your dog a pat on the head.
