If you are a guinea pig owner and your guinea pig has reproduced, its time to take certain extra care to make sure those newborns are well taken care of. Since they are so young and weak they are more vulnerable.
To start with you will have to make changes in their cage. Since guinea pig babies have tiny heads, there are chances that may get trapped in between the bars and strangle themselves. Now I am sure that no one wants that for his pet. What can we do to prevent this? The problem sounds huge but the solution is very simple, lining the cage walls with Chloroplast or cardboard from the ground level and up to about one foot. If however you have a grid wire cage then you will have to double the grid walls and lace a cardboard between the two. This will last for about 4-6 months and after that they would large enough and it wonky be necessary anymore
Care must be taken that you don’t touch the newborns no matter how cute they look to you. You will have to make sure that there is ample time for the mother to bond with them and clean them. Only after she cleans her child it is safe for you to touch them and the mother won’t abandon the pups even if you scent is there. To make sure they are growing alright you should monitor their weight on a continuous basis. If there is no drop in their weight its fine otherwise you will have to provide them with extra health care or take them to vet. Mother’s milk and alfalfa rich diet in the form of pellets help in their rapid growth.
It is true that newborns demand certain extra care but when they grow up healthy it leaves you with a proud feeling and you become richer in experience. All in all it’s a worthy endeavor.
