Obesity or overweight pets are a common problem that we are seeing a lot these days. It is basically an excessive accumulation of body fat on the pet’s frame and it is estimated that nearly 40% of dogs are cats are overweight or obese.

Some of the causes of obesity include:

• Overfeeding – too many calories

• Excessive treats

• Decrease of lack of exercise

• Metabolic conditions (such as hypothyroidism)

• Change in lifestyle

Some of the problems associated with obesity include:

• Joint diseases

• Cardiovascular diseases

• Respiratory issues

• Diabetes

• Pancreatitis

• Other health problems

If your veterinarian has already rolled out a metabolic condition, then certainly putting them on an appropriate diet, meaning the right number of calories for that pet, will help a lot. There are also various types of medications that help losing weight, but generally, diet and exercising are very effective ways to lose weight.

It is important to avoid feeding to many treats while you try to get weight off your pet. Pet food packaging usually contains guidelines on how much to feed your pet. There are just guidelines. So if you find out the pet is not losing weight on that amount feed, or that they are gaining weight, then you need to make the appropriate adjustments. If you are not sure how much your pet should weight, ask your veterinarian.
