The first thing that any puppy should learn is the meaning of the word “No.” This in effect means “Leave it alone,” so unless you-are in a position to see that your puppy leaves it alone, do not say “No.” When you give a command to a puppy which you cannot enforce and the dog disobeys you are merely teaching it to ignore your voice. Prohibitory commands like “No” should always be growled in a harsh tone. When calling a dog to you, always use a pleasant tone.
Chasing cats and other domestic animals must be firmly discouraged. All dogs will chase anything that runs, and once they are chasing are practically impossible to stop in mid-flight. To discourage chasing, lead your puppy into temptation as much as possible and shout “No” as soon as it begins to display any interest.
