Dog Allergies Treatment

Dog allergies can be different types like Flea Allergies, Food allergies, bacterial allergies, Atopy allergies and contact allergies. The common dog allergy symptoms include skin irritation, hair loss, excessive itching and hot spots. The flea allergies in dogs are caused by flea saliva which can cause irritation of the dog’s skin. Bacterial allergies in dogs cause small bumps, red blotches and ringworms. Contact allergy symptoms are similar to bacterial symptoms.

There are various dog allergies treatments to reduce to dog allergy symptoms.

  1. First thing is to wash the dog skin with dish soap for removing the irritants. Natural conditioners with essential oils can be used to wash the skin gently.
  2. Using hydrocortisone and anti-histimine medications can help in stopping the allergic reactions of the body which affect the dog skin.
  3. Oral medications can be used to cure skin and flea allergies. Benadryl is an important drug which can cure canines and atopic allergies. Before giving such oral drugs, dog owners must check with a veterinarian so as to avoid side effects.
  4. In order to avoid further development of skin allergies, exposure to suspected irritants like flea, bacteria, house mites etc, must be reduced. If we suspect some food, chemicals or plants which trigger dog skin allergies, then such irritants must be avoided. Also treating the dog skin with oat meal conditioner can provide some nutrition to its skin and reduce the irritation, itching and redness.
  5. Supplements and nutrient meals can reduce the flakyness and dryness of the skin. Natural skin supplements and homemade shampoos using natural ingredients like apple cidar vinegar, olive oil, tea tree oil, oat meal etc, can reduce the allergic reactions to parasites and fleas. Dry skin can be avoided by giving bread which is soaked in olive oil.

Dog allergies are treated either through symptomatic therapy or immunotherapy. Dermacool which has witch hazel and cortispray can be used on dog skin to treat dog skin allergies. Corticosteroids are compounds which can reduce inflammation and itching of skin. Antihistamines like Seldane, Atarax, Benadryl, Tavist and Chlortrimetion can be used for treating dog skin allergies.

Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids which are rich in plants containing gamma-linolenic acid  and fish oils can help in reducing dog allergy symptoms. Dog allergies can be reduced by proper environmental control like use of air conditioners to avoid circulation of airborne allergens like dust mite, flea, bacteria etc.  Commercial Dog allergy shampoos are available in market to treat skin allergies in dogs.
