In order to get his attention, just use something like a doll or toy and wave it above his head. Once he notices it, through it out. Do not throw it too far; just about five feet should be fine. Throwing it further down, might harm him, especially when he gets down to the end. When you do throw it, do not only say fetch. Incorporate his name, so if his name where Jimmy, you would say, “Jimmy, fetch!” Sometimes he might drop it on the ground by mistake. So, when he takes it again, you must take the toy from his mouth saying “out”, so this was, he will be trained in order for this exact rule. Everyone deserves a treat for their accomplishment. Whenever he listens to you and actually obeys, you should give him something he likes. Whenever he listens to your signals, you should reward him, so that he knows to listen to your signals more often. This is a very important and great tip for every dog owner, as it works with every dog.

Many dogs enjoy the attention they receive while performing tricks. A lot of these tricks are quite easy to teach, especially when you use food as an incentive. If you have taught your dog to sit, it is easy to embellish this by getting it to shake hands. Tell it to shake, and pick up its paw at the same time. Reward it with a tidbit, and the idea will soon catch on. You can persuade it to offer each paw in turn. Begging is also taught from the sit position. Do not start this until the dog is at least six months old, because before this age the back muscles are not strong enough. Some dogs find it easier to beg if they are sitting in a corner, so that the angle of the wall behind them helps them to balance.

The first thing that any puppy should learn is the meaning of the word “No.” This in effect means “Leave it alone,” so unless you-are in a position to see that your puppy leaves it alone, do not say “No.” When you give a command to a puppy which you cannot enforce and the dog disobeys you are merely teaching it to ignore your voice. Prohibitory commands like “No” should always be growled in a harsh tone. When calling a dog to you, always use a pleasant tone.
