One of the most common pets that people like to keep is fishes. A popular fish to keep is the goldfish. These are found in abundance and are not very expensive too and also have an interesting history. These goldfish are said to be the descendants of the Prussian Carp which was found in Southeast and East Asia. It is said that the Carp was first domesticated by the Chinese as they used to eat it.

If the goldfish is taken care of and is raised in appropriate conditions it can grow well and to a length of about several inches and has an average life of about 20 years. Mostly people keep the gold fish in bowls and because of this the lifespan of these fishes is reduced to seven to eight years and they also do not grow properly. For goldfish the bowls are not a good place to grow as many people think. The reason is that goldfish is a variety of fish which loves to explore and also produces a lot of waste. The gold fish gets bored in this bowl and will tend to stay at the bottom and also because of the waste the toxic levels of water will increase making the bowl and the water unhealthy for the fish to grow in.

The ideal place for a goldfish to grow will be a pond but they can also be kept indoors in a fish tank the water of which is changed regularly. The waste is cleared periodically from the tank and this enables the fish to grow and stay in healthy conditions. They are happy with other fishes as they are a social fish. They love to explore so they are happy in a pond or in a tank which has plants and gravels. With the correct care, environment and companion, a gold fish can grow well and stay for many years.
