Pocket pets are very sensitive and require extra care. These small rodents are adorable and their presence undoubtedly cheers up a person’s home. They need to be understood by their owners well as each pocket pet has their own individual personality traits and natural instincts. The common types of pocket pets that people love to keep are gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs and rats. Each of these pocket pets have to be cared for in a different way and that also includes their health and medical needs too. The following is a brief guide on how to keep one’s pocket pet hale and hearty for a healthy life.

The main symptoms of sickness in a pocket pet are loss of appetite, problems in breathing, self isolation and diarrhea. Once these symptoms are identified one should contact the local veterinarian before administering any type of medicine to their pocket pet. One should choose a vet who is well versed with handling pocket pets. These creatures are very sensitive and hence, need to be treated with love. When sick they isolate from the other animal colony and remain upset. The vet needs to understand their traits in order to cure them successfully. There are respiratory problems that are very common in rats and others and this affects their smelling abilities. This helps them to sense food, an enemy or a friend in its near vicinity. When sick this basic sense fails and hence the creature suffers.

Poor hygiene is the major cause of most illnesses in pocket pets. One must ensure that the cage is clean, so that the pocket pet has good sanitation and hygienic surrounding to live in. They require a clean cage with fresh food and water. One should never keep them confined in their cages for a long time. They should be taken out for exercising and stretching. They need to be spoken to very softly and gently in order to make them feel comfortable and not nervous. Medicines should be administered as per the vet’s instructions. They should never be skipped or missed.

One should make sure that there is ample food and water in the cage and the water bottle of this pocket pet should always be filled. One very important point that one should never miss out is that these dishes should be filled and never kept empty. One should arrange everything in order in the cage. The pet should be monitored and supervised. The vet should be consulted immediately if there are any kinds of deterioration in health. A person must ensure that the pocket pet is taken care of in the correct and proper manner in consultation with the vet. Pocket pets should be fed one tablespoon of fresh fruit and vegetables. Other good choices are apples, bananas, peas and green beans. If there are other dietary changes, the vet should be consulted.

Thus, in the above manner, one can take care of one’s pocket pet when sick. A person must be compassionate and very patient during this sensitive period. The pocket pet requires gentle care and tenderness when sick in order to get a speedy recovery to get back to its enthusiastic ways.
